You can grow vegetables in any climate. But you can’t change the weather!
When your garden choices don’t match your climate, you’re in for an uphill battle. Making a few observations about your climate empowers you to make great garden choices.
🌡️ Temperature: All plants have ideal growing temperatures. Outside those optimum temperature ranges, plants become less productive, and growth grinds to a halt. Too far outside the zone, plants die. It’s crucial to know what temperatures your plants need and when those temperatures happen in your area!
🌤️ Sunlight and Shadows: Your vegetable plants need 6-8 hours of sunlight minimum to thrive. Measuring hours of sunlight and mapping your shadows BEFORE you dig or build your garden beds will ensure your plants’ success.
Once you understand your climate, you can let Mother Nature do the work. She’ll even let you take the credit!

Garden health starts with soil health.
Soil stores all of the nutrition your garden needs to grow and thrive. Which turns into the nutrition YOU need to grow and thrive!
Making sure your soil has balanced levels of nutrients means your plants will have better resilience to pests and disease AND more nutrients and flavor for you.
Just like your climate, your soil is pretty unique. We highly recommend getting your soil tested every year so you know exactly what you’re working with. Your local cooperative extension office can test your soil, as well as some universities. Just look up “soil test” and your area to find options!
You can also learn so much about your soil just by touching it. Once you understand your soil’s texture and nutrient content, you can work on improving it year after year for healthier plants AND a healthier you!

The third step toward creating a thriving, successful garden is also one of the most misunderstood: Compost!
Compost is a good friend to gardeners, your plants, and even the planet because it:
🦠 Invites beneficial microorganisms to your space
🍂 Brings in lots of fixed nitrogen
💩 Provides a continuous supply of fresh nutrients to your soil
Best of all, a good compost pile takes just MINUTES a day and can save you hundreds of dollars on fertilizer and soil amendments each year! Not to mention all the household waste you’re diverting from landfills, too.
You just have to combine 3 things in your aerobic compost pile to get it to work:
💚 Your “green” organic waste
🤎 Your “brown” organic waste
🌬️ Lots and lots of air

Plan your plants!
Here’s where most people make a mistake and fall off the turnip truck: WHAT you plant is just as important as how, when, and where you plant.
When you choose the right plants for your space, give them what they need, and rotate them appropriately, you get…
🍅 Bigger and longer harvests
💪 Healthier plants and soil beds for next season
🐞 Less pests, diseases, and wasted space
The key here is good planning beforehand. It’s called the 6Ps……

You’ve assessed your climate, soil, compost, plants, and water systems…and now it’s ALMOST time for the fun part…harvesting! But before you can harvest, you need to conquer the next step….
Day 6 toward your thriving, successful garden is prune and trellis. In order to get great harvests, you need to time them correctly. And you might have to do a little pruning first.
If you don’t give your plants a good pruning and harvest at the right time, your garden will…
😞 Grow less food for your family
😝 Leave a weird or bitter taste in your mouth
🐛 Become more vulnerable to pests & other unwelcome guests
BUT if you do a little bit of work pruning & planning your harvest, you’ll get…
🍆 Bigger vegetables
🌿 Bonus salad greens for the whole season
🍅 Harvests that taste so sweet and delicious, you’ll never look at grocery-store veggies the same ever again!
When you prune your plants (after they reach “adolescence” of course), you’re helping them grow! When you get rid of small, dying, or pest-ridden stems and leaves, you are freeing your plants…Because they don’t have to give precious energy, nutrients, or water to that leaf or stem!
