Weekly Garden Tip:ย
You can plant many of your plants closer together using bio-intensive planting strategies… and bio-intensive harvest strategies. Your harvest per plant will go down, but you can get more harvests overall this way. Plus, the food is often more tender and easier to deal with in the kitchen.
For example, instead of planting beets 4โ apart in rows 18″ apart, growing them to the size of a fist, plant them 1″ apart in 12″ inch rows and grow them to radish size. Then, halfway through growing them for baby beet harvest, plant another row in between.
Harvest the in-betweens of the first row, letting the remaining beets grow slightly larger. Then, harvest the slightly larger baby beets and replant the row once the second planting is halfway through growing.
In this way, youโll not only get more harvest from the row, but you’re doubling the planting area, growing rows in between halfway through maturity. And a bonus? Baby beets are much faster to cook and easier to manage in the kitchen!

Welcome the German White Garlic, a farm’s treasure that combines simplicity in cultivation with a powerhouse of flavor. This hardneck garlic variety is a European classic, known for its vigor and robust taste that has spiced up many dishes around the globe. With its impressive cold resistance and generous yield of plump, rich cloves, German White Garlic truly captures the essence of nature’s brilliance. At Farm on Central, itโs one of our top varieties, with its consistent growth season after season. How does it compare to Music Garlic? These varieties bear a close resemblance, though the German White has marginally more cloves that are a tad smaller. ๐ง
However, German White Garlic doesn’t shy away in flavor. It boldly accentuates various dishes, from your comforting soups and sizzling roasts to zesty salads. Its intensity surpasses your average garlic, and a word from our kitchen? It’s delightful as garlic salt. Also, keep an eye out for those springtime scapes – an absolute treat! ๐ฉโ๐ณ

Dear Arti:
Question: Our large tomatoes had blossom-end rot and remained orange. Most would not turn red. Those that did ripen did not taste good. The cherry tomatoes ripened and tasted good. However, all the plants had a disease with yellowing leaves and black spots that killed the leaves. What is needed to avoid a repeat next year? – Janice E.
Answer: Great question! Well, these are the main aspects I would look at for solving your issue:
Tomatoes ripen best between 70-75โ (21-24โ). At temperatures above 85-90โ, they wonโt produce the pigments needed for their red color, and ripening can also slow at the seasonโs end when it cools off. Days to maturity vary, with cherry tomatoes ripening faster, so check your seed packet. Avoid excess nitrogen after flowering, and remember some varieties are orange when ripe. Also, avoid over-fertilizing, as too much nitrogen after flowering can delay ripening.
Diseases like septoria leaf spot can impact ripening. Rotate your crops every four years, prune indeterminate varieties, and water soilโnot leaves. Mulching also helps prevent disease by keeping soil from splashing onto plants.
Lastly, ensure plenty of sunlight and balanced soil nutrients. A soil test can reveal a lot! Personally, I love TPSLab.com
Hope that helps, Janice!
