Dear Arti Image

Dear Arti:

Question: Are coffee grounds good for the soil? If so, for only certain veggie plants? I save all of my grounds and feel that the guidance is mixed. Thanks so much!! – Pam. B., Boise, ID

Answer: Hi Pam,

So glad you reached out!

Coffee grounds can be very good for plants. However, you’ll want to know a few things. First, coffee grounds are high in nitrogen. Nitrogen is the most volatile nutrient, so the nitrogen levels in your soil can vary more quickly. I add coffee grounds to my garden all the time. However, I do not add them to my garden when my root crops are rooting or my fruiting crops are fruiting. Root and fruit crops will opt for nitrogen that produces vegetation over other nutrients needed to produce the root and fruit crop I want to harvest. So, once a root crop begins to develop and a fruiting crop begins to flower, I will not add any more nitrogen to the soil.

And while coffee grounds can be beneficial, like most things it’s best in moderation. So if you feel like there are too many grounds in the garden, add them to your compost pile.

One last note: you may want to avoid using any coffee grounds in your garden that have added flavors or other additives.
