Dear Arti Image

Dear Arti:

Question: How do you know how long a plant will last? After days till maturity, how long before you have to cut it down to replant, as it will stop yielding? Thank you. – Donna M., Northern Ireland

Answer: Hi Donna,

So, the answer here is that it depends on your climate, when you planted, and the crop. Each crop is different. For example, if you’re growing determinate tomatoes, they all come in over about 2-3 weeks, then they’re done producing. If you’re growing indeterminate tomatoes (vining tomatoes), they will produce until the weather is too cold for them to produce any longer, so in some places, you can actually grow them for many years and consistently harvest!

Another example is kale. If you plant kale on time, it can produce through one season if the weather doesn’t get too hot. If the weather gets too hot, they sometimes go to seed or sometimes keep producing, but the leaves aren’t as tender and flavorful.

Perennials, on the other hand, can produce many years, going dormant in the winter months and coming back each year.

So, each plant is different and will act differently in different climates. You’ll want to make a list of crops you want to grow, then look at them each individually.

I hope that helps get you started, Donna!
