Weekly Garden Tip
If your compost is not breaking down and seems dry, you probably need more food scraps or other GREENS to get more active biology in the pile. And yes, you can pee on your compost pile as a GREEN, too. Moisture levels should be similar to good soil; it should be spongy when you grab a handful and form a ball when you squeeze– but excess water should not be able to be squeezed out. Just remember to test before you pee! 😅

Dear Arti:
Question: Any secrets or tricks on discouraging chipmunks from a garden, rather than killing them ? Thanks. – Gerard W., NY
Answer: Hi Gerard,
The only sure way to keep small animals out of the garden is to enclose the garden entirely. This will reduce your frustration and save you time, money, and harvest!
However, this can be a hefty investment and that doesn’t make sense for everyone. So, as an alternative, you can enclose each bed separately with mesh.
As a repellent option, you can try using cayenne around the garden areas. Critters also dislike citrus, garlic, and peppermint. But be careful when using essential oils in the garden, as they can harm the beneficials as well.

GYOV CEO and Lifestyle Gardener Denise Beins’ garden is buzzing with life! Our artichokes are thriving, and we will let a few go to flower just for the bees—they go wild for that pollen. Nearby, lavender blooms draw in even more pollinators, filling the garden with beauty and gentle hums. It’s a joyful reminder that when we garden with intention, we not only enjoy the fresh food lifestyle but also create a haven for both people and pollinators to enjoy! 🐝
