Dear Arti:

Question: Which are the best companion plants for peas and lettuce? – Lasita R.

Answer: Hi Lasita,

Great question! Well, I actually like to plant peas next to lettuce and other leafy greens. Peas are nitrogen fixers, so they take nitrogen from the air and put it in the soil– so cool!
Nitrogen is vital to the vegetative stage of a plant’s growth, so planting crops whose leaves you intend to harvest nearby can help that crop thrive! Lettuce, kale, chard, collard greens are all good choices. Annual herbs like cilantro, dill, parsley, and basil are great options too!

And keep in mind that other plants can thrive nearby with peas, but I prefer to plant the leafy crops near those nitrogen fixers.

I also like to plant lettuce in the warm season behind a crop I can prune, which helps me get lettuce later in the season. Indeterminate tomatoes are a good choice for this.

GYOV CEO and Lifestyle Gardener Denise Beins is hoping summer sticks around just long enough for her cucumbers and tomatoes to fully ripen. 🍅 Her cucumber plants are bursting with blooms, and the bees are still buzzing happily between those and the stunning sunflowers. 🌻🐝 What’s even better? Denise has planted her sunflowers in the curb strip for her neighbors to enjoy, too! 👩‍🌾 It’s a true community garden moment, spreading a little extra sunshine in the neighborhood.
