Weekly Garden Tip:

According to the World Health Organization, mosquitoes are one of the deadliest animals in the world, causing millions of deaths every year. And while chemical mosquito repellents and electronic bug zappers are touted as being effective against these vampires, the latter often kills more random insects than mosquitos and the former has created mosquitoes immune to the chemical warfare.

Your number one strategy to combat these vampires is hole-y water. 😅

That is, oxygenated moving water. Even the smallest of stagnant bodies of water without air bubbles are breeding places for mosquitoes and can spread disease. Overwatering your garden causes many of these breeding grounds, so reduce your water usage as much as possible. Fill in or mulch dips where puddles might form, and make sure you bless your ponds and bird baths with circulation by adding fountain pumps.

Dear Arti:

Question: Why do my cucumbers have lots of flowers, but not much fruit? – Annette

Answer: Hi Annette,

This could be a sunlight or temperature issue, but the most common reason cucumbers flower but don’t produce fruit is lack of pollination from the male to female flowers. This is normal at the beginning of the growing season but if you’re farther into your season, it may be that you don’t have enough pollinators in your area.

If that’s the case, you can hand pollinate with a q-tip. Just be sure to pollinate from the male flower to the female. Many people try this and pollinate female to female. So be sure to identify the male flower. 🙂

In the long run, you can increase pollinators in your garden by ensuring that at least 30% of your garden consists of flowers and perennial herbs. There are plenty of edible plants that attract pollinators, so you don’t have to lose out on your yields.

I hope that helps Annette!
