Big news ahead! We’re only days away from releasing the Joyful Garden Docuseries. Before we dive into that exciting journey, letโs hear a fun story from Martha, a valued member of our Grow Your Own Vegetables community. What’s Martha all about in this video? Gardening with Kids. It’s magical.
Martha, a retired gardener from Ontario, is living the dream of nurturing her garden and sharing the joys of gardening with her grandkids.

Gardening with Kids: A Special Connection

Marthaโs love for gardening shines through when she shares how her granddaughter has enjoyed the garden from an early age. Even at just two years old, her granddaughter knew exactly where the carrots were growing and would eagerly pull them right from the ground and munch on them. “They taste so much better than what you buy,” Martha says with a smile.
This connection to fresh, homegrown food is one of the true joys of gardening. Itโs not just about the harvest โ itโs about the experience of nurturing something from the earth, watching it grow, and then enjoying the fruits of that labor.
Gardening with Kids: A Garden to Call Her Own
Marthaโs granddaughter now has her very own little garden plot. She grows tomatoes, cucumbers, and anything else she can imagine. Martha explains that these plants are “things she wants to grow,” which helps make the garden experience feel personal. What you choose to grow impacts how you connect with your garden โ and this is a great way to teach kids the importance of caring for something.
Gardening also creates a sense of independence. Her granddaughter is learning how to take ownership of her own little patch, fostering both pride and responsibility.
The Taste of Fresh, Homegrown Food

Thereโs something magical about walking outside and picking vegetables directly from the garden. For Martha, itโs not just about growing food; itโs about the quality and taste. “You just walk out the door and get what you want,” she explains. Homegrown produce, like tomatoes and cucumbers, is often more flavorful than store-bought alternatives. Plus, thereโs no rush or stress; itโs simply a joy to pick what you need when you need it.
This sense of convenience combined with the satisfaction of growing your own food makes gardening even more rewarding.
Gardening with Kids: Experience Joy and Connection
Marthaโs story is a reminder of how gardening can strengthen bonds, create memories, and offer unique experiences for you and your family. Whether youโre growing food with kids or simply enjoying some time in nature, gardening brings pure joy.
Marthaโs story invites you to reflect on your own garden experience and perhaps inspire you to share it with others. Gardening offers so much more than food; it gives you an opportunity to connect with nature, enjoy quality time with loved ones, and witness the beauty of growth in every season.
So, whatโs stopping you from starting your own garden? Take a moment to enjoy the simple, joyful process of growing something beautiful with those you love!
Martha, I hope that you have many more years to garden.
Thanks for sharing.
Hey Brian,
Thanks! We couldn’t agree more ๐
Love this! It’s wonderful to see the generational impact can have!
Martha has such a wonderful perspective on including gardening in your lifestyle, even if it starts on a patio in retirement! Her love for growing food with her family and being outside is contagious. Thank you, Martha ๐
I love how Martha includes the kids in her life with her gardening and is passing that passion and excitement along to them.
SO happy to have Martha’s perspective and knowledge. What a gift ๐
Hello there! I could have sworn I’ve been to this website before but after reading through some of the post I

Hey! I’m at work surfing around your blog from my new iphone! Just wanted to say I love reading your blog and look forward to all your posts! Carry on the excellent work!
For Martha and myself, the same starting point – retirement. Thats the time when you can invest in your environment and enjoye the changements. Nature thanks back by giving you hope and something to anicipate to every season, every year.
Enjoyed Martha’s interview. It’s great that she’s teaching her young granddaughter about growing vegetables and eating them raw right from the garden. When my granddaughter’s come over they are always interested in my garden, especially picking berries. It’s good for them to see how food grows. They especially enjoy it when they are very young and curious.
Loved this interview with Martha. I moved to my new home in 2016 and had eight raised garden beds put in.
I can grow more food than I can possibly eat. It is nice to be able to share fresh organic vegetables and fruit with friends. I have kale in the garden still — just picked some this morning. I will garden for the rest of my life. Love making fresh pesto, salsa, freezing rhubarb for later use, and love being able to go out and pick veggies for dinner!
A great and inspiring talk. Thank you Martha and Stacy! I hope to plant my starter herbs later this week.
Thoroughly enjoyed Martha’s story and hearing about how gardening has enriched her life. Neat to learn how she is passing that on to other generations!
