Weekly Garden Tip
When looking for indoor lights, you want to choose bulbs that are standard sizes; for example, for strip lights on shelves, 2ft and 4ft T5’s are the most widely-made bulbs. This way, you don’t end up purchasing a light fixture from a company that forces you to use a rare bulb only they make, only to abandon manufacturing that bulb three years later, forcing you to buy a whole new fixture.

Question: I’d like to know the best place to buy everything necessary for growing microgreens and also how to best utilize the greens. Can they be dried in my dehydrator and used as nutritional supplements? I’m certain I’ll have too many to utilize while fresh. Recipes? Can they be put in alcohol to make tinctures? – Ashley Waters
Answer: Hi Ashley,
So, I like Bootstrap Farmer for trays and True Leaf Market and Johnnys for microgreen seeds. You can get lights online or at many hydroponic stores– just be sure to buy bulbs that are universal and that are made by an agricultural company.
You can try to dehydrate them for a nutritional supplement, but I would choose the heartier greens for this like sunflower, pea, and radish. Other microgreens probably won’t give you the volume and be worth the time you’ll have to put into dehydrating.
To use them all without waste, you can:
1) Make a cream of greens soup and freeze for winter.
2) Blend the varieties up and make ice cube flavors– arugula, basil and cilantro would be great choices for this. Then just pop a few cubes out and add to any dish while you’re cooking!
I’ve never tried to make a microgreen tincture before, so you’ll have to experiment and let me know how it goes.
