Dear Arti:

Question: Why do I keep getting little flies in the soil and around my plants, and how can I safely get rid of them? – Michele C., NJ

Answer: Hi Michele,

There are a number of possibilities of what these “little flies in the soil” might be, and without seeing them it’s hard to say. One of the most common little flies are fungus gnats. These are often mistaken for fruit flies. If fungus gnats are what you have, they don’t usually infest an outdoor garden to the point of causing a huge issue. However, they are a nuisance. Their presence is a sign of an overwatered garden. Pull back on the watering slightly and see if that helps. 🙂

🏡 In the GYOV Garden

Fennel

GYOV CEO and Lifestyle Gardener Denise Beins’ garden is buzzing with life! Our artichokes are thriving, and we will let a few go to flower just for the bees—they go wild for that pollen. Nearby, lavender blooms draw in even more pollinators, filling the garden with beauty and gentle hums. It’s a joyful reminder that when we garden with intention, we not only enjoy the fresh food lifestyle but also create a haven for both people and pollinators to enjoy! 🐝
