Dear Arti:
Question: What is the best combination of soil for starter plants and the best soil to add to my raised garden to prepare for planting the starter plants? Thanks. Sonny, PA
Answer: Hi Sonny,
Every gardener has their preferred mixes for seed starting/transplants. My personal preference is Fox Farm mixes. I’ll use the ones that have the least nutrients since seedlings are tender and high nutrient levels can burn baby plants. Then I’ll cut that with 50% coconut coir. Then I’ll add a 20% ratio of worm castings.
When I plant the transplants in the garden, I’ll dip the end of the roots in a transplanting formula containing beneficial microbes. This is one I really like.
In terms of the best soil to add to your raised bed to prep for transplanting, that depends on the kind of bed you have. Typically though, you should only need to add a 2″ layer of compost to your beds to maintain health. Now, when I transplant, I’ll put another small scoop of worm castings in the hole. If I’m sowing a row of seeds, I’ll dig a deeper trench, put a thin line of worm castings, cover that with a bit of soil (so the seeds don’t directly touch the castings), then plant my row as usual.
To your healthy transplants! 🥳
