Weekly Garden Tip

Harvest Club member Emily S. got a massive amount of shallots in just a 4×5 ft (1.2 x1.5m) bed. 16 pounds of Dutch variety shallots to be exact! She spaced them 7” (17cm) apart in a grid. She left the papery tops peeking out of the soil, then mulched with 4” (10cm) of straw. She left them alone until July with the exception of pruning flower stalks. Of the 16 pounds harvested, Emily used 3 pounds for replanting. Go Emily! Thanks so much for sharing your yield and how you got there!

Dear Arti Image

Dear Arti:

Question: I’ve been leaving the roots of harvested plants in the ground until spring. Some are vast, and as my beds are only 10″ deep, I’m afraid of them breaching my plastic film that separates my great soil from the weeds below. Is this good to do? Thank you for doing this!!!!! – Sherry Macd from BC

Answer: Hi Sherry,

So, this is more like a conversation than a straight answer, as there are several factors to consider here.

In terms of piercing the plastic, the plant’s roots would do that during growth if the plant was going to do that at all. So, most likely it would not pierce after you harvest the plant or during winter when the plants aren’t growing.

Now, let’s say the roots do pierce the plastic. Depending on how many years you’ve had your garden, many of the perennial weed systems may have been killed off by now.

Leaving the roots of harvested plants in the ground to fully decompose will just be no-work compost for you! However, it can increase your soil pest populations. To mitigate this, be sure you rotate your crops. Soil scuffing the top few inches of soil throughout the season can help prevent pests as well.

I hope that helps, Sherry! 🙂
