Weekly Garden Tip
If your garden is sloped, plant the drought-tolerant plants and woody perennial herbs like rosemary, lavender, oregano, etc. at the highest point and the water lovers at the lowest point.
This way, you help create the moisture environment your plants want. This is the same concept used in herb spirals.

Dear Arti:
Question: On the “jar soil test,” I HOPE you mean 15 SECONDS of hard shaking, not 15 MINUTES??? I’d be exhausted!! – Molly M., Huntington Beach, CA
Answer: Hi Molly,
Lol! I think you’re referring to the instructions on our blog on how to do the soil jar test. For anyone who doesn’t know, you can discover what kind of soil you have through taking this test.
And I hear you! Actually, some soils do need a 15-minute shake. Some soils only need a 45-second shake. How long you need to shake your soil up will depend on what kind of soil you have… which is what you’re trying to find out, right? So, it’s a bit of a conundrum because you don’t know until after the test what kind of soil you have.
However, if you know your soil is more sandy, you can shake it for less time. But if you have heavy clay soils, it’s best to shake it for a longer time period. Now 15 minutes is quite a long time to shake your soil. So, what you can do is pretend you’re making mashed potatoes but water instead of cream and soil instead of potatoes.
The goal here is to separate all the particles with water, so you get the most accurate results as it separates. Start by mashing the soil first, then add a bit of water, mix, add more, etc. until you have a slop. THEN add the rest of the water you’ll need, and shake for 15 seconds. It will take more time, but you won’t have to do so much shaking.
Don’t forget: you can take breaks as needed!
I hope that helps, Molly! 🙂
