Weekly Garden Tip
One of the first things you want to do each season is set your goals. To do that, revisit what you really want from your garden. One year you might be feeling less dedicated to high yields and more dedicated to experimenting with interplanting and beautifying your space. Other years you might be more interested in the physical exercise gardening gives you. We change with the seasons too! Here’s a free guide you can use each year to get clear on your goals.
A large number of growers give up on gardening within their first one or two seasons for various reasons. Garden overwhelm, stress, confusion, disappointment, fear– all these can contribute to fresh foodies giving up on their dream of a nutrient-dense paradise.
But the thing is, most of the time when growers don’t get the result they were looking for, it’s because they’re missing just a few pieces of important information to help the pieces fall into place.
That is why we created the Joyful Gardener Docuseries. Break through the challenges, the failures, and the disappointments with a newfound understanding of how the pieces fit together to make fresh healthy harvests possible.
The Joyful Gardener Docuseries airs Feb 18-25th. It shows you how to garden in only 8 episodes. Well, plus a LIVE Q&A at the end!
Whether you’re slightly disappointed or feeling failure after failure, this event is sure to inspire! But don’t take our word for it; thousands of growers attend this event each year. Join with them this year and catapult your garden experience to a whole new level!!

Dear Arti:
Question: Good afternoon, I have been following your events for a while now, and I always find them incredibly useful, practical and informative. I have decided to make my own compost in the last few months, and I discovered that I have lots of worms in my pile, which makes me very happy, but how do I collect the soil I need to put on my beds and containers without having many worms as well? Will it be ok to have some of them in the soil? Really appreciate all the advice and help given.
Thank you very much.
Ana D., England, UK
Answer: Hi Ana, so glad you’re enjoying our events! Actually, we have one coming up that has a whole video on composting! You can register for that event HERE.
It sounds like you’re hot composting, but just in case, I’ve included vermicomposting here as well.
So, if the worms that end up in the compost are earthworms or a native worm, they’re fine if they end up in the soil containers. If they’re vermicomposting worms or an invasive worm (like the asian jumping worm species invading the north USA and Canada), then that’s a different story.
However, in hot compost piles (which is the most common compost style for home growers), if you see a lot of worms, that usually means your pile didn’t get hot enough to compost all the material down, so the worms are coming in hotter than the compost! In this case, remember you need to turn your compost pile and have the proper browns to greens (carbon:nitrogen) ratio and the proper moisture levels to create enough microbial activity to heat up the compost pile.
If you have an invasive worm species, you will want to eliminate them as best you can. They can do more harm to your native ecosystem and your garden in most circumstances.
If you’re vermicomposting, then the red wigglers and other worms used in vermicomposting are okay in small numbers, but you’ll want to separate the castings out as best you can. A tiered system is usually the easiest way to do this.
To learn more, register for the event I mentioned coming up. It’s the Joyful Gardener Docuseries– and it’s totally free.
I hope that helps, Ana!
