Dear Arti Image

Dear Arti:

Question: Is it typically easier to grow microgreens in a jar or in dirt, for those of us with NO semblance of a green thumb??🥴 – Kelley M., Knoxville TN

Answer: Hi Kelley,

So the answer to this is neither. When you grow in a jar, you’re growing sprouts. Sprouts are growing in a jar or sometimes a specialized sprouter and they’re harvested just after the seeds sprout. They’re usually consumed with the husk on. Sprouts have a higher risk for bacteria and mold contamination, so be sure you’re growing correctly.

Microgreens are not grown in soil unless you’re growing them outside in the ground. Microgreens are grown in substrate. Substrates mimic soil and sometimes contain elements of soil (like compost). Microgreens are typically grown in sterilized media like coconut coir and peat moss, and they’re harvested either after the first set of leaves emerge (called the cotyledons) or once the second set of leaves emerge (called the first true leaves).

So, sprouts aren’t microgreens, neither are grown in soil, and only sprouts are grown in a jar. Hope that clears up any confusion! 🙂
