Weekly Garden Tip:

Compost doesn’t have to be expensive to be high quality. Some of the more nutrient-dense composts can actually be some of the cheaper options; for example, garden trainer and commercial grower Crystal Meserole has used $4 giant bags from the hardware store. The key is to read the ingredients and know what to look for, then experiment BEFORE your season begins if you have time.

Dear Arti Image

Dear Arti:

Question: I am lucky to be surrounded by community gardens in my Denver community, just east of downtown. I even have access to a free farmer’s market, and they grow a bit of everything. In my grow bags that remained unopened last season, I’m considering either gooseberries or raspberries. Which is easier? – Deon G.

Answer: Hi Deon,

That’s so awesome you’re surrounded by community gardens!

Between the raspberries and gooseberries, I’d go for the gooseberries in your grow bag. I feel like it’s better to grow raspberries in the ground because of their growth habits, and you’ll get a bigger harvest from the gooseberry if the pot is the correct size.

Hope that helps!

Magenta Spreen Microgreen
GYOV CEO and Lifestyle Gardener Denise Beins shares a tray of magenta spreen ready for harvest. Magenta spreen (Chenopodium giganteum) is leafy green with a beautiful pink center and a flavor reminiscent of beet. This variety can be a bit sensitive to coconut coir because coconut coir can lock up magnesium. Be sure to treat your coir with a bit of epsom salt water for rehydration and watch for nutrient deficiencies.

Leaves help suppress weeds, regulate soil temperature, retain moisture, and release nutrients as it decomposes.
