Dear Arti:

Question: I want to plant zucchini after the life cycle of squash vine borer egg-laying time has ended in zone 7B. But I have read multiple articles that say it is anywhere from mid June to August. August is too late to plant zucchini here. What to do? – Bea H.

Answer: I love this question!

The squash vine borer causes so much damage, and not everyone lives in an area where they can plant zucchini after its life cycle.

Here’s a tip: There are some zucchini-like varieties that the squash vine borer doesn’t like. The squash vine borer targets cucurbits and thrives in stems that are soft and hollow.

Instead of zucchini, I plant a variety called Tromboncino that my mentor recommended to me. You might also find it listed as Rampicante. The stems of this variety aren’t as hollow, and the vine borer typically doesn’t bother them at all.

They also produce giant fruit that can grow up to 3 feet long, so you can enjoy some for dinner and still have plenty left over for zucchini bread—or blanch and freeze it for later.

And the best part? You can grow it as both a summer and winter squash! Eat it before it’s fully ripe for a mild zucchini flavor, or let some harden on the vine to store for winter.

If your heart is set on zucchini, though, you can preempt the issue by using BT (a soil-dwelling bacterium). Some people inject the base of the stem with it at the first sign of eggs. You can also prevent infestations by wrapping the base of the stem with foil. I’ve used this method, and it’s worked for me with about 75% success.

Those are a few solutions for you, Bea. May you have a thriving summer squash harvest next year!
