Weekly Garden Tip:

Avoid leaving more than 7 leaves on your leafy greens (like kale, collards, and chard) at any given time. There’s no need to leave more on the plant; that just cuts down on the air circulation, increasing the chance of disease. Plus, it invites all the more pests to feast on your harvest! Lessening the leaves also allows you to plant closer together and harvest smaller, more tender leaves.

Expand your garden toolkit with the garden tool that never wears out!

Dear Arti:

Question: Best organic method of weed control in raised beds; how to make my own organic weed control treatment? – Kaylene

Answer: Hi Keylene!

Any organic weed killer you use can still harm the beneficial organisms and plants around it. Plus, many organic weed killers don’t work as effectively as you’d hope.

Anything applied to the soil can affect its composition. For example, vinegar can kill weeds, but it also alters soil pH and can damage nearby plants.

I recommend hand-pulling weeds when you can. If you’re dealing with rhizome-spreading weeds, be sure to pull up as much of the root as possible. Afterward, you can help prevent new weeds by using mulch, planting biointensively, or adding ground covers like micro clover. If you keep pulling up those rhizome spreaders, they’ll eventually give up.

For ongoing weed management, you can use a hoe (I prefer the collinear hoe) and lightly scuff the top few inches of soil once a week. This will both kill weeds and expose pest pupae and eggs to the harsh environment above the soil surface, preventing them from maturing into pests. It’s a great two-in-one method!

I hope that helps!

Fall Leaves on a Tree

GYOV CEO and Lifestyle Gardener Denise Beins added some leaves in some of her garden beds to enrich the soil for the next growing season.

She’ll let them do their magic, as they protect the soil and plant roots from winter temperatures as well as our magical superheroes in the soil (beneficial microbes and earthworms). They will break down in time for spring planting!
