Weekly Garden Tip:Ā

Growing indoors with artificial lighting? Here’s some information that can help! Seeds need 200-300 μmol/m2/s; seedlings need 300-600 μmol/m2/s; if you’re growing indoors hydroponically, you’ll want 500-600 µMol/m2/S for the flowering and fruiting stage. μmols of light measure the number of photons passing through a target area. μmol/m2/s is the number of photons you need to reach each square meter each second.

How One Ugly Carrot Started the Grow Your Own Vegetables Movement

Have you ever gotten involved with a great company and wondered how it started? Perhaps you’ve pondered the origins of Grow Your Own Vegetables. All businesses begin with an idea—sometimes after months of research, sometimes as a solution to a problem, and occasionally through a single ā€œAha!ā€ moment that ignites the spark.

Carrots in Dirt

For Stacey, the founder of Grow Your Own Vegetables and the master gardener from last week’s masterclass, it all began with an unassuming ugly carrot. This carrot represented not just a unique gardening experience but also the motivation to inspire others to embrace home gardening. Curious about the ā€œAha!ā€ moment that sparked this gardening adventure?

Discover Stacey’s story and how it led to the creation of Grow Your Own Vegetables in this week’s highlighted blog article!

Dear Arti Image

Dear Arti:

Question: Indoor gardening system. I’ve tried this also but not done well, was hoping an indoor system would be helpful … two things needed: How to indoor garden & the best system to use indoors? Thanks again! – Sonya W.

Answer: Hi Sonya,

Indoor gardening is a hot topic! Your setup will depend on your environment, desired crops, and, of course, your budget.

I prefer container gardening with potting mix. While hydroponics can work, they come with risks—especially in carpeted rooms or apartment complexes, where water damage can be a concern. Hydroponic systems also require constant attention to nutrients, pH, and EC. Plus, they can be fragile; systems like NFT or aeroponics rely on electricity, so a power outage could wipe out your crop.

That said, if your living situation is stable—say, a tiled dining room you never use—hydroponics could be a great fit. For tomatoes, consider a hydroponic water culture or wick system; for lettuces, an NFT system might be ideal.

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your space, schedule, and the crops you want to grow. Here’s hoping you find what works for you!Ā

Marigold Dried Seed Head

As many plants are starting to come to the end of their growth cycles, it’s a great time to harvest seeds for the next growing season.

Shown here are some seeds from GYOVĀ CEO and Lifestyle Gardener Denise Beins’ Himalaya marigold plant. Seeds are fascinating!

Just this small handful of seeds is more than enough to plant throughout the garden next season.
