[Video] Container or Raised Bed Garden: What’s the Difference?
In many ways, gardening has its own language. This can feel a bit overwhelming, especially if you are new to gardening and want to invest your time and money in the right ways! This shares everything you need to know about the differences and similarities in container gardening and raised bed gardening, so you have the confidence boost you need to get your hands in the dirt.

Weekly Garden Tip:
Honing your watering skill can take time. Understanding how much to water different plants and recognizing when they need it can feel confusing when you’re just starting out. Rule of thumb for successful watering: Get to know your plant varieties! Learn when that plant wants water and how much they need in any given stage of growth. For example, don’t heavily water tomatoes the day before harvesting, and avoid harvesting tomatoes after a heavy rain. Otherwise, your tomatoes are likely to split from too much water after harvest. The tomato regulates fluid in the fruit… until you pick it!

Dear Arti:
Question: Something is eating the leaves and stems of my tomato plants. I can’t find any cut worms or see anything but [something] eats them right to the ground. What is it? What can I do to stop it? – Gloria
Answer: Hi Gloria,
While cutworms aren’t the only potential perpetrator here, they are the most likely. The caterpillars themselves spend the day hiding out in soil so you won’t see them during the day. Plus, they’re brown so they’re camouflaged in the soil.
Your best remedy is always prevention: Interrupt the life cycle BEFORE more eggs are laid. Scuffle the top 1-2” of soil twice per week with a hoe for 2-3 weeks before planting in your squash bed. This brings pupae to the soil surface. The sun will dry the eggs and larvae out and the birds will feed on larvae. Soil scuffing is your ultimate method for pest prevention and does the least damage to beneficials.
Another strategy is to plant beneficials that draw caterpillar predators into your garden.

🏡 In the GYOV Garden

GYOV CEO and Lifestyle Gardener Denise Beins is busy growing lemon grass and lemon balm in containers. These two plants can spread more than desired, so growing in a container keeps it confined. Additionally, choosing to grow in a container allows Denise the ability to move her lemon grass indoors during the colder months!
