Dear Arti:

Question: When should we prune plums and pear trees in Ireland ? – David

Answer: Hi David,

I’m not a fruit tree expert, but for your area, pear trees should be pruned during the dormant season from November to March. Plums are pruned in early spring or mid-summer. The reason plums are pruned during this time is to avoid infection by silver leaf disease. Silver leaf disease is caused by a fungus that gets in through wounds during cool weather and eventually kills the tree by blocking water carrying vessels.
