Enjoy this short message from Stacey Murphy, founder of Grow Your Own Vegetables, as she shares her favorite reasons for gardening. Do you garden for the fresh taste of nutrient-dense food? Or maybe you garden for another reason which Stacey shares in this video. No matter your “why,” we can all agree that the benefits of gardening are life-changing!
Weekly Garden Tip:
When growing pea shoots (microgreens) choose a field pea. Pea tendril varieties are more for culinary garnishes and aren’t as tender or flavorful. Happy growing!
Free Resource: Celery Growing Guide!
As a child, do you remember coming inside from a hot summer day spent playing outside, only to find that your mom had made your favorite snack she called, “Ants on a Log.” Have you heard of it? It consists of sliced celery with peanut butter and raisins on top. Celery is ingrained in our memories as a healthy and refreshing snack, and it seems mom was on to something as science backs the health benefits of this crunchy treat! It contains a variety of vitamins and minerals, it serves as one of nature’s diuretics, and can be used to treat a variety of health conditions. In fact, studies have shown that celery has pain fighting, anti-fungal, antihypertensive, and anticancer properties!
We have an amazing free resource guide to share with you that will tell you all about the health benefits of celery, as well as detailed instructions on how you can grow your own celery right in your backyard. It gives step by step instructions from seed to harvest to storing, so you can take your garden to the next level.
Product Feature: Grow Your Own Cacao!
During last week’s presentation about growing your own chocolate, Jeff Paul from Buena Fruta Farm shared the ins and outs of growing cacao. Several ‘summiteers’ were excited to make this delicious addition to their home garden, so they placed an order for a cacao plant that is already on its way to their front door! For good quality cacao powder or if you want to grow your own cacao, we recommend checking out Buena Fruta Farm.
Dear Arti:
Question: What is the best type of fertilizer to use for vegetables and when should I use it? I’m on the verge of having a good garden but the produce is small and yields are low. – Renee
Answer:
Hi Renee,
Small produce can be caused by a number of factors, including a lack of 6-8 hours of full sun without any shade which is necessary for your garden. But if you’re sure it’s a soil fertility issue, the best fertilizer is compost. Add a 2″ layer of high quality compost to maintain soil fertility levels. To increase soil fertility, you may need to add more than 2″. Yes, you can overdo the compost so be sure to keep the additional compost within reason. Add at the beginning of spring and lightly mix in the top few inches of soil.
If you’re growing more than 9 months out of the year, you’ll want to add an additional 2″ layer sometime mid season.
Not all compost is equal though, so be sure to choose a good quality compost.
🏡 In the GYOV Garden
GYOV CEO and Lifestyle Gardener Denise Beins is doing some spring cleaning in the garden! New gravel for the garden paths, fresh top soil for the areas where microclover will be added for weed suppression, and new compost to top off the raised beds!
