Weekly Garden Tip

For high wind areas, plant dense shrubs around the garden or ivy on tall fences to reduce the gust blows to your plants. You might also consider building your garden below ground level a few feet. Avoid solid windbreaks as the wind will often whip around the object and hit your garden anyway.

Dear Arti Image

Dear Arti,

Question: How can I deal with constant drought in the southwest? – Susan

Answer: Hi Susan! So many people struggle with drought so your question can help a lot of other people, too. Thanks for asking!

Drought ridden areas can be really challenging to grow in. The main solution for this is to install a drip irrigation system. These systems deliver water directly to the soil, which is not just good for conserving water. It’s better for the plants, too.

If you don’t want to use a mechanized irrigation system because of electricity or plastic, you can use a manual irrigation called ollas (pronounced ‘Oh yaws’). These are an ancient form of irrigation that uses terra cotta pots with lids that you bury in the ground and then fill with water. The pots slowly disperse the water into the soil.

Growers who live in extremely dry conditions also use wicking beds with great success. These are basically beds with a water reservoir underground.

If you also struggle with extreme high temperatures but get long hours of light, you might consider a walipini. This is basically a greenhouse built into the ground with a clear or opaque roof to allow light in. Because the plants are in the ground, the growing area stays cooler, and water doesn’t evaporate as quickly.

Those are some of the best solutions for drought-ridden areas, Susan. I hope this helps!

GYOV CEO and Lifestyle Gardener Denise Beins planted a few different cover crops to help with weed suppression and add nutrients to her soil.

Shown here are some fava beans she saved from last spring’s crop. Fava beans are a great way to add nitrogen to the soil, and they are super easy to grow! There are also lots of ways to cook fava beans.

Denise planted some crimson clover in the curb strip—which the neighborhood crows seemed to enjoy—as well as buckwheat in some of her empty growing places.
