Dear Arti:

Question: Can you grow microgreens indoors throughout winter with just natural sunlight through a window, or is it a must to use electric lighting sources? – Christine L., Ontario, Canada

Answer: Hi Christine,

Generally speaking, I recommend you have more light for your microgreens than that which is coming through the window, as ones with more lighting are going to be more nutrient-dense than other microgreens that do not get enough light.

However, a few varieties can sometimes grow with window sun, depending on the window, orientation, and location. I cannot guarantee the nutrient quality of them, but you can certainly experiment. The varieties you’ll want to consider are field pea and radish.

If you’re going to try this, I recommend putting an opaque covering over your window to scatter/diffuse the light. You’ll avoid burning your microgreens this way, and you’ll get better coverage by scattering the light.
