Dear Arti:
Question: Based on rotation planting, is there a list of succession planting? For example, if I planted tomatoes in area one in year one, what do I plant in that lot in year two, three, etc.? – Hazel C., Toronto Canada
Answer: Hi Hazel,
This is such an important concept to understand for successful gardening. It’s also a REALLY big topic. But here are a few tips to get you started:
If you plant tomatoes in an area of your garden, you won’t plant anything from the Solanaceae family for another 4 years. So, no tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, eggplant, etc. You want to plan your crop rotation based on plant families, not just the individual crop.
Succession planting is entirely different. Succession planting is the number of rounds of a crop you can get in the same place within that growing year. For example, radish grow in spring and fast-growing varieties mature in as little as 23 days! Spring lasts for longer than 23 days in many places, though. So once your radish matures, you can harvest and immediately plant another round of radishes, giving you 2 successions of radishes. In some places that have shorter summer seasons, like Canada, you can have many rounds of many cold crops in before winter sets in.
Hopefully that helps set you on the right track for proper crop rotation and many successions for you, Hazel! 🙂
GYOV CEO and Lifestyle Gardener Denise Beins is savoring the simple joys of summer—popping sun-warmed cherry tomatoes straight from the vine! It’s one of her favorite garden treats, perfectly sweet and refreshing while watering the beds. She loves filling her pockets to share handfuls with friends and neighbors, too. After all, the best part of growing your own food isn’t just the harvest—it’s the joy of sharing those fresh, delicious bites with others.
