Weekly Garden Tip:
Never grow in plastics unless they are food grade or hydroponic grade plastics. Many people buy cheap plastic or aluminum trays for growing microgreens, but these are not safe for growing food in.
Visit a local upscale restaurant that serves fresh fish. That fish often comes in plastic trays that are required to be food grade (considered the safest along with hydroponic plastics for growing food). These trays make great microgreen trays or water catchment trays for your seedlings!
Not only will you be saving money, you’ll be preventing that plastic from going to the landfill or going to a recycling facility where precious water and other resources are used to recycle that plastic!

Dear Arti:
Question: The neighboring pasture has couch/coach grass. How can I win the battle against this as I’m short on time but two of my gardens share the fence line? – Karen L.
Answer: Hi Karen L.,
Elymus repens, commonly referred to as quackgrass, couch grass and a myriad of other common names, can be a pain to get rid of!
Several thick layers of cardboard and a very thick layer of mulch can kill the grass in the immediate area. But be careful, the rhizomes may spread further into the area. You need to not only cover the area, but around the weed as well so the rhizomes that go looking for light don’t find any.
Despite its annoying persistence, Elymus repens rhizomes are quite useful. Traditionally, it was used in Austrian medicine for a variety of ailments, some have made a syrup from the boiled roots and some use that syrup to brew into a beer. You can also roast the root for a coffee substitute, grind the dried root to a powder and mix with flour, and the rhizomes were even used as an incense in areas where resin incense was less available. So when you need to pull it, remember that it doesn’t have to go to waste!
(ALWAYS be sure to have your weeds identified by an expert before consuming. Visit the closest University with a biology or horticulture dept. for help.)

Have you ever wondered what those thin, green stalks that grow from the garlic bulb are? Those are called garlic scapes, and they are a delicious addition to many dishes as they offer a different flavor than traditional garlic. Plus, it utilizes more of the garlic plant so you have less waste! GYOV CEO and Lifestyle Gardener Denise Beins will be harvesting her garlic scapes to add to some tasty dinner recipes.
